Recovering Reefs - A Good News Story!

It has been 12 months since the reefs around the Nusa Islands were last filled with the familiar sights of tourists, snorkelers, divers, watersports, pontoons, jetskis, speedboats and ferries… for the last year, with travel restrictions in place, the ocean around the islands has been resting and returning to its natural state.

At Blue Corner Dive we took this opportunity to focus efforts on helping nature heal and restore the coral reef ecosystem. Over the last year our team members have conducted regular reef restoration work at the Nusa Islands Coral Reef Restoration Site, located on a reef off of Nusa Penida, Bali. Volunteers from the local community are recruited and our boat goes out for work days at the site. The team has worked hard this last year to maintain a coral nursery and transplant corals out upon areas of degraded reef.

This has been a perfect time to be conducting restoration work, as the corals have been able to grow and create habitat for marine organisms uninterrupted by human impacts. While Blue Corner has been conducting coral restoration work in the area for over 3 years now, the work which has been taken place during these last months have been especially important. The coral growth at the restoration site during this last year has been incredible with areas which were previously broken coral rubble are now healthy stands of coral reef.

We look forward to the time in the near future when we will be able to take divers out to show the restoration site. Our team is excited to give guided tours of the area and share the vision that with a bit of help the reefs can restore to their beautiful splendor!
